We are almost at Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, and we have LOTS of activities and resources – local and national – to tell you about.
Like last year, we are coordinating orange illuminations of landmarks across the country to create more awareness about bladder cancer. For example, on May 2, 2019 at 10 p.m. ET, Niagara Falls will again be lit orange. In Houston, Baylor College of Medicine will be lit orange the entire week of May 13-20, 2019. Baylor has also named May 17, 2019 as Bladder Cancer Day. Does your city have a landmark that you would like to see lit orange? Contact the building or site management to determine their policy. Or email Communications@BCAN.org, and we will work with you to make it happen.
On Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., BCAN’s is working with Representative Matt Cartwright (D-PA) to introduce a House resolution to designate May 2019 as “National Bladder Cancer Awareness Month.” Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) will also be submitting the designation in the Senate. Additionally, Representative Julia Brownley (D-CA) is leading a request for $10 million in annual funding for bladder cancer research. She is circulating a letter to her colleagues on the Hill, asking them to join her in this request. Representatives Matt Cartwright (D-PA) and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) are including language in the Department of Defense’s appropriations bill to make bladder cancer eligible for funding. We have received over $8M in funding through this program over the past couple of years. You can help these efforts by contacting your state representative to ask them to support bladder cancer awareness and research. Contact your Senators and Representatives here.
BCAN Walk To End Bladder Cancer Events are in 26 cities across the U.S. If you haven’t registered to walk or donated to a walk, there is still time. Check out our Walk website here to get started. No Walk near you? Set your own time and place to raise money and awareness with a Virtual Walk. Information is here.
Of course, we will also be getting social on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter elevating awareness about the signs and symptoms of bladder cancer and who as at risk. You can help by sharing posts and creating your own. Use #BladderCancerAware as this is a global effort using a unified hashtag.
Keep up with everything and find resources at our Bladder Cancer Awareness Month page here. We will continue to post resources, stories, and photos.
