The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) is proud to announce that we have been designated a Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Charity Partner! BCAN has been allocated 25 guaranteed entries for the 38th Annual Marine Corps Marathon to be held on October 27, 2013; an event that sold out in 2 hours and 41 minutes in 2012.
  • We are looking at building “Team BCAN” to not only run in the event and raise awareness for bladder cancer but to raise needed funds for fostering research and patient education. According to the Marine Corps Marathon, there is not a required qualifying time to participate in the event, but all runners should maintain at least a 14 minute mile pace. In order to become a member of “Team BCAN” and officially have a slot in this year’s race, you must be registered through BCAN.
  • No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
  • If you are interested in becoming a member of BCAN’s team or have any questions, please contact Larry Rzepka, BCAN’s Executive Director, at lrzepka@bcan.org.
  • Medical Outreach Program

As a volunteer with the BCAN Medical Outreach program, you can make it possible for every individual with a new diagnosis of bladder cancer to be given a copy of BCAN’s patient handbook, Bladder Cancer Basics for the Newly Diagnosed.

BCAN needs volunteers who are willing to identify, and telephone, urology practices to ask if they would like to receive BCAN brochures and sample copies of the handbook.  Then, after BCAN has sent these samples directly to the urology practices, the volunteer follows up – again by telephone – to ask how many copies the practice would like to receive (or if they would like an electronic version to post on their webpage) for distribution to their bladder cancer patients, especially those newly diagnosed.  Each volunteer works from home and has the support of a Medical Outreach Team Leader for direction and guidance.

To date some 1,200 urology practices have been contacted and more than 35,000 copies of the handbook have been distributed.  BCAN’s educational materials have been extremely well received and are now being regularly reordered by medical practices, cancer centers, and hospitals.  Doctors consider the handbook a very valuable educational tool for their patients and, once they have read the handbook, patients invariably go to www.bcan.org to learn more about bladder cancer, BCAN, and BCAN’s other services such as our Online Support Community, our Quarterly Newsletter, and our Patient Forums.

If you have basic computer skills and unlimited long-distance calling on your telephone then you can be a Medical Outreach Volunteer.  And if talking on the phone isn’t for you, we could also use one or two volunteers with good Internet search and Excel spreadsheet skills to help us identify and organize urology practices by state.

So if you feel you could be a Medical Outreach Volunteer, please click here to complete the BCAN Volunteer Form and check the box marked Medical Outreach National Telephone Volunteer.
