The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) is proud to announce that we have been designated a Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Charity Partner! BCAN has been allocated 25 guaranteed entries for the 38th Annual Marine Corps Marathon to be held on October 27, 2013; an event that sold out in 2 hours and 41 minutes in 2012.
  • We are looking at building “Team BCAN” to not only run in the event and raise awareness for bladder cancer but to raise needed funds for fostering research and patient education. According to the Marine Corps Marathon, there is not a required qualifying time to participate in the event, but all runners should maintain at least a 14 minute mile pace. In order to become a member of “Team BCAN” and officially have a slot in this year’s race, you must be registered through BCAN.
  • No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
  • If you are interested in becoming a member of BCAN’s team or have any questions, please contact Larry Rzepka, BCAN’s Executive Director, at lrzepka@bcan.org.

Phase 1 Study of an Autologous Neo-Urinary Conduit in Subjects Requiring Incontinent Urinary Diversion Following Radical Cystectomy

Tengion, Inc. is developing neo-organs and neo-tissues to meet clinical unmet needs. Tengion is currently conducting a phase I clinical trial to examine whether Neo-Urinary Conduit™, which is made in the laboratory from a combination of a patient’s own cells and other materials, can be used to form a conduit to safely allow urine flow from the kidneys to outside the body after radical cystectomy in patients with bladder cancer.

There are many complications associated with traditional ileal conduit surgery, some of which are directly related to mobilizing bowel tissue and placing it within the urinary tract where it secretes mucus and absorbs urine. The Neo-Urinary Conduit is designed to eliminate the need to use bowel in these patients.

More information on this clinical trial is available at http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01087697.
