The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) is proud to announce that we have been designated a Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Charity Partner! BCAN has been allocated 25 guaranteed entries for the 38th Annual Marine Corps Marathon to be held on October 27, 2013; an event that sold out in 2 hours and 41 minutes in 2012.
  • We are looking at building “Team BCAN” to not only run in the event and raise awareness for bladder cancer but to raise needed funds for fostering research and patient education. According to the Marine Corps Marathon, there is not a required qualifying time to participate in the event, but all runners should maintain at least a 14 minute mile pace. In order to become a member of “Team BCAN” and officially have a slot in this year’s race, you must be registered through BCAN.
  • No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
  • If you are interested in becoming a member of BCAN’s team or have any questions, please contact Larry Rzepka, BCAN’s Executive Director, at lrzepka@bcan.org.

    Ways to Raise Awareness of
    Bladder Cancer Every Day

    Fall 2010

These ideas can help you raise awareness of bladder cancer in your community every day.

Join the Bladder Cancer Cure Team. Bladder Cancer Cure Teams participated in the 2010 Philadelphia Insurance Sprint Triathlon, organized individual runs, and brought family and friends together to run in a community race. Their goal was to increase awareness of bladder cancer and raise funds to advance bladder cancer research, and they raised more than $34,000! Learn more about these Bladder Cancer Cure Team participants.

Interested in helping? You can join BCAN’s Bladder Cancer Cure Team! We would love for you to help BCAN by participating in an event and setting up your own personal fundraising page. Find out how.

Write a letter to your local paper. BCAN has put together a template that you can use. Check out the letters and articles others have written in BCAN’s Bladder Cancer News page, and take five minutes to write your own letter and raise awareness of bladder cancer in your community.

View and share BCAN’s videos on YouTube. BCAN also has a new YouTube channel, with two videos posted so far. Our one-minute Bladder Cancer Awareness video features bladder cancer survivors and doctors, and can be used as a Public Service Announcement by local television stations. We also have a short clip of BCAN co-founder and President Diane Zipursky Quale discussing Bladder Cancer Awareness Day. Interested in sharing these videos with others? On the YouTube page, you can “Like” the video by clicking the “Thumbs Up” below the video, or click “Share” to share the video with friends by email, Facebook, Twitter, and more.

Become a fan of BCAN on Facebook. BCAN’s Facebook page has been very active! If you are a Facebook member, become a fan of BCAN on Facebook to see regular updates from our website, the latest event information, and new bladder cancer stories. Just go to www.facebook.com/BladderCancer.

Wear a t-shirt, hat, or bracelet to raise awareness of bladder cancer. BCAN has added new items to our online store! We now offer hats, t-shirts, and polo shirts, in addition to our bracelets, key chains, lapel pins, and awareness bands. These offer a great way to raise awareness of bladder cancer in your community. To learn more or place an order, visit the BCAN store.

Write for the Cure. BCAN’s grassroots on-going fundraising campaign is called “Write for the Cure” and is a simple way to help raise awareness and funds on our behalf. Learn more about Write for the Cure. For an example, see Jacqueline’s story.
