How did you decide to become a nurse in this field?
As a student nurse and after graduation I worked on a 60 bed surgical specialty unit at a county hospital. Urology was one of the specialties that intrigued me. The majority of the patients had urological problems due to trauma. There were many challenges and we had to be very creative in providing care and education for our patients. This inspired me to become a WOCN to better serve this patient population.
What are the biggest challenges of the job?
Providing adequate resources for the patients is a big challenge. There can be limited availability of certain supplies for a specific patient need. It’s difficult to follow up with patients once they leave the hospital. There are often inadequate outpatient resources for patients withproblems.
What is most rewarding about this work?
I get to see the patient live again. Not just quantity but quality of years. It’s rewarding to know that small changes or adjustments I suggest for my patients can completely change their life for the better.
In your opinion, what are the biggest needs in? What would you like to see change? (in addition to finding a cure!)
