The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) is proud to announce that we have been designated a Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Charity Partner! BCAN has been allocated 25 guaranteed entries for the 38th Annual Marine Corps Marathon to be held on October 27, 2013; an event that sold out in 2 hours and 41 minutes in 2012.
  • We are looking at building “Team BCAN” to not only run in the event and raise awareness for bladder cancer but to raise needed funds for fostering research and patient education. According to the Marine Corps Marathon, there is not a required qualifying time to participate in the event, but all runners should maintain at least a 14 minute mile pace. In order to become a member of “Team BCAN” and officially have a slot in this year’s race, you must be registered through BCAN.
  • No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
  • If you are interested in becoming a member of BCAN’s team or have any questions, please contact Larry Rzepka, BCAN’s Executive Director, at lrzepka@bcan.org.

    Bladder Cancer Think Tank 2011

BCAN’s 6th annual Bladder Cancer Think Tank started with a bang on Thursday, August 4! More than 100 leading doctors, researchers, patient advocates, and industry representatives have come to Coronado, California to talk about ways to improve bladder cancer care.  The meeting concluded on Saturday, August 6.

    Check out our daily updates:

The 2011 meeting theme is “Identifying Obstacles and Creating Solutions in Bladder Cancer: Basic Science, Clinical Trials and Survivorship.”

Everyone here shares a common goal: working together to help advance bladder cancer research. This may be at the basic science level, by finding better ways to collect data, or by improving survivorship by creating new patient educational materials. The 2011 meeting objectives are to create opportunities for collaboration among basic scientists, practitioners, advocates, and industry partners to identify obstacles and create solutions in the following ways:

    I. Foster multi-disciplinary opportunities among translational scientists and clinicians for collaboration in bladder cancer research.
II. Establish standards for data collection in bladder cancer research.
III. Identify key factors affecting the completion of bladder cancer clinical trials and evaluate ways to increase patient involvement and enrollment.
IV. Identify how current practice patterns differ from the bladder cancer treatment standards, evaluate why that variation exists, and determine steps to encourage a standardized treatment approach.
    V. Develop resources to fill identified gaps in available survivorship tools and patient information for bladder cancer.
