What are the risks or side effects that I should expect from intravesical drug treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer recurrence?
The methods used to treat bladder cancer are very powerful, so they can cause unpleasant side effects. The side effects you may experience depend on the type of treatment used.
The side effects of intravesical chemotherapy depend on the specific drugs that are given. Also, each person reacts differently to treatment. Side effects may include frequent trips to the bathroom (frequency), not going to the bathroom enough (retention), not making it to the bathroom in time (incontinence), or pain when urinating. Less common side effects may include urinary tract infections, stomach pain, nausea, weakness, headache, and a general feeling of being sick urination.
Patients on immunotherapy such as BCG may experience painful or frequent urination, or flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills or fatigue.
Side effects during cancer treatment vary for each patient and may differ from one treatment to the next in the same person. Ask your doctor to explain the side effects of your treatment approach and suggest ways to manage them.
