How have you coped with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer recurrence?
In October 2007, I noticed blood in my urine and allowed this to continue for over a month before I finally went to my doctor who sent me to the urologist. I underwent surgery the following week, and the doctor removed five papillary tumors from my bladder. I went from a ‘normal’ guy to a ‘cancer survivor’ in the blink of an eye. |
Since the initial diagnosis, I have had four surgeries related to bladder cancer and a number of immunotherapy treatments. In 2009, I experienced a recurrence of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Yes, I am anxious every three months before my checkups but I guess that is a normal reaction. I am very thankful that I went to my doctor. I am now dealing head on with this new part of my life.
What gives you hope? What advice would you give to others who are experiencing recurrence?
I am aware of the love that surrounds me and that gives me hope. My faith, wife, family, friends, co-workers, medical community – I am so blessed to be so loved and cared for by so many people. Life is wonderful!
My non-medical secret advice to others is to recognize the support that is available to you and use it! Then live every second of your life. Along with my work, I am active in my church, keep honey bees, play music in two bands and volunteer. Who could ask for a better life! |
