Recognizing Nurses this Week – Deborah Hensley

Since this week is Urology Nurses and Associates Week, at BCAN we are highlighting a few nurses making a difference in the lives of people with bladder cancer. Deborah Hensley, BSN, RN, CURN, Immediate Past President of the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA). She is a registered nurse at UT Southwestern Medical Center in the Department of Urology. She is also a member of the Data Safety Monitoring Committee for the randomized trial titled “Open vs. Robotic-Assisted Radical Cystectomy”.

Survivors, Mountains and Happy Dances!

Where can you find bladder cancer survivors, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Happy Dance Song in one place? At the North Carolina Bladder Cancer Awareness Picnic, of course. The annual picnic, now in its fifth year, takes place at The Swag, a country in on a 5,000 foot high mountaintop in Waynesville, NC. The meeting was organized by Nancy Parrish who chose the beautiful location for bladder cancer survivors and caregivers to meet others who have been on the same journey.

Thank You Michigan Memorial Park!

Each year, in July, tallies are made of the number of miles walked by each member of the Michigan Memorial Park Walking Club in Flat Rock, MI. This year, the top three walkers of the group were Sharon Labelle-Dzierwa, Ron D and Bill E who all unanimously agreed to choose BCAN as the “charity of choice” for the $1,800.00 donation from the Michigan Memorial Park. That is, one dollar for each mile walked in honor of Sharon’s sister, bladder cancer survivor, Patty Dzierwa and all those affected by the disease.

Women and Bladder Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society in 2013 an estimated 72,570 Americans will be diagnosed with bladder cancer. Of those diagnosed, about 18,000 of those cases will be women. An estimated 4,390 women will die of bladder cancer in this year alone.

8th Annual Bladder Cancer Think Tank

On August 8-10, 2013, more than 120 leading clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, and industry representatives convened in Snowmass Village, Colorado, for the 8th Annual Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network Think Tank. Being the only bladder cancer-specific annual meeting in North America, this year’s Think Tank engaged participants representing more than 60 institutions, coming from across the United States and Canada.

Monica Smith joins the BCAN team as the new Executive Director, ready to make a difference in the future of bladder cancer. “I am looking forward to advancing BCAN’s mission and to being on the front-lines advocating for greater public awareness and research funding for bladder cancer,” says Monica. “Advocacy is a strong force for improving the lives of patients and I am eager to begin influencing the landscape alongside BCAN.”
