Great News from a BCAN Friend

When my husband John and I had the idea to start a bladder cancer patient advocacy organization in May 2005, the first person we contacted was Dr. Mark Schoenberg, the bladder cancer specialist who was treating my husband at Johns Hopkins. Mark’s first response after hearing our idea was “you must do this and I will help you.”


Update – Access to Blue Light Cystoscopy

As many of you may know, there has been a reimbursement issue regarding blue light cystoscopy. This issue has deterred some medical centers from using the technology and patients may not have access to it. The BCAN position is that with so few advances in the disease, we must break down barriers to technology that may improve a patient’s quality of life.

Steve Gushée passed away last April and his wife, Mary, was devastated. When Steve was finally diagnosed with bladder cancer after 5 years of testing and misdiagnosis, it was too late. The cancer had metastasized.

I often hear from cancer patients that they feel a sense of helplessness when they are diagnosed. Their body is attacking itself and they are reliant on doctors and other medical professionals to make decisions and treat the disease. While our control over the disease may be limited, there are many steps a patient can take to be proactive.

BCAN Raises Awareness at NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo

Thousands of people came to this free event to learn more about how to live a healthier life in the upcoming year. Article Highlights Future of Bladder Cancer Care in the USA

An article was published recently in the journal Nature titled “The future of bladder cancer care in the USA.” The authors discuss how despite the large number of people diagnosed with bladder cancer each year and the high costs of treatment and management for this disease, there is a lack of awareness about bladder cancer as a public health concern and lack of funding for research.
