John C. Quale, Founding Director, Emeritus
In June 2008, BCAN lost its co-founder and board member, John Quale, to bladder cancer. John was diagnosed with the disease in 2000, and had been a tireless advocate for new treatment options and increased research. He and his wife, BCAN president Diane Zipursky Quale, founded the organization in 2005 to shine a light on this often ignored disease. Working with leading clinicians, advocates, and supporters, they created a place where patients, caregivers and the medical community could find information, support, and hope to battle this disease.
In his professional life, John was a prominent communications attorney and partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. A cum laude graduate of Harvard College in 1968, Mr. Qua
le earned his law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1971. Before joining Skadden as a partner in 1996, he worked at the law firms Kirkland & Ellis and Wiley Rein, where he was a founding partner and head of Wiley’s mass media communications group.
John was a frequent lecturer and author on federal communications regulation and had been a member of the executive committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association. He was named one of the world’s leading communications lawyers by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business and was included in The Best Lawyers in America 2008. Antoinette Cook Bush, a partner in Skadden’s Washington, D.C. office who worked closely with Mr. Quale, told TVNEWSDAY that Mr. Quale “was a great mentor, a great friend and an amazing lawyer. He was patient and thoughtful, and believed that training young lawyers was one of the most important things he could do.”
Michael Rogan, head of Skadden’s Washington, D.C. office, said “for the 8 years John battled cancer he came to work every day with a smile and a courageous optimism that I can only marvel at. John was a wonderful man and the entire office will miss him greatly.”
John was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife, Diane, along with his children, Virginia Quale, Jane Verganani, John Andrew Quale, Rachel Goldman and Alisa Goldman, and two grandsons, John Carter Ellinwood and Harris Todd Ellinwood.
It was John’s courage and strength in how he battled bladder cancer that remain a remarkable example and legacy of hope for all who walk this path. His death leaves a hole in our bladder cancer family but his life serves as motivation to continue our important work.
