Dr. Steinberg has performed over 500 radical cystectomies for bladder cancer since joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1994. The majority of these have been followed with continent urinary diversion, and prefers this as the procedure of choice in both men and women undergoing radical cystectomy. He has performed several hundred orthotopic bladder reconstructions to the urethra in men and women. Furthermore, Dr. Steinberg has a large surgical experience with radical cystectomy after previous pelvic radiation therapy for prostate or bladder cancer and has a large experience with complicated reconstruction for patients with ureteral obstruction, incontinence, urethral recurrence and fistula formation after radical cystectomy. In addition, to his surgical expertise, Dr. Steinberg coordinates all of the clinical trials for the Section of Urology at the University of Chicago and currently is enrolling patients in several innovative National Cancer Institute and industry funded studies for patients with bladder cancer.
