Dan Theodorescu, M.D., PhD, recently became the new director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center and coordinator of its $139 million research funding portfolio. He also holds the Paul Bunn Chair in Cancer Research, the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the region.

Prior to that, Dr. Theodorescu was the Director of the Paul Mellon Prostate Cancer Institute and Paul Mellon Professor of Urologic Oncology and Professor of Molecular Physiology at the University of Virginia. He received his urological training at the University of Toronto where he also obtained a PhD in molecular and cell biology with Robert Kerbel, an internationally known cancer biologist. He then completed a clinical fellowship in urologic oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City prior to his arrival at the University of Virginia in July 1995. Currently, Dr. Theodorescu has a focused clinical practice in urologic oncology with a special interest in prostate and bladder cancer and minimally invasive robotic surgery.  Dr. Theodorescu manages an active molecular biology lab focused on identifying the molecular mechanisms leading to prostate cancer metastasis and bladder cancer invasion and their potential translational applications to patients with these diseases. His laboratory is currently funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Theodorescu serves or has served on peer reviewed study sections for the National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society and the Department of Defense Prostate Initiative. He is the editor for the World Journal of Urology and on the editorial boards of several publications including Cancer Letters and Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases. He is also a regular reviewer for Cancer Research, Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research, American Journal of Pathology, Journal of Urology and Urology.
